Quilted Kitten Pillows
Fall 2019. The last of the Christmas pillows that I finished were these adorable kitty pillows! I found some cute kitty fabric online and it was the perfect amount to make some kitten pillows. The pattern for these pillows is by Elizabeth Hartman. I love the creativity of her patterns, how well-written they are, and how fun they are to make! This is a free pattern called Cat Friends Pillow and it is a mini pattern written to utilize the kitten blocks in her The Kittens quilt pattern.
I have plans to make the full quilt someday (probably a couple different versions, one of which will be Christmassy) for now I knew I wanted to make a pillow for myself and for two cat-loving friends of mine. The inspiration for the colors of these kittens came straight from the cat fabric I was using for the back of the pillows.
The backing fabric is from designer Tula Pink’s Tabby Road line. I got back into quilting and learned about fabric designers after this collection debuted, so it was a little hard to find! I’m glad I was able to find what I did. I love this kitty fabric and probably would’ve ordered bolts of it if I could’ve found some! One of the reasons I wanted to use it for pillow backs is so that I didn’t have to cut it up much. This is the perfect fabric to leave as whole as possible!
Tula Pink also has a line of solid fabrics that match her collections, so I pulled the bright green and blue fabrics that matched the kitties on the backing fabric for the kitties on the front! It worked out really well!
I normally wouldn’t gravitate to such bright colors, but they were perfect for these pillows! I made zipper pillow backs for these pillows, so they are washable and I love the bright aqua zipper in the pink pillow back!
Each pillow front is the same for all the pillows and there were two blue backs and one pink back.
I sent these off to be longarm quilted in the same quilting pattern that I used on the Santa pillows.
I love how these pillows turned out and am excited to make the whole quilt! I am also excited that I chose to make one of these pillows for myself!
Finished: January 17, 2020. Pattern: Cat Friends Pillow & The Kittens by Elizabeth Hartman. Fabrics used are: Kona Ash (background), Black, and White; Tula Pink Solids in Aegean, Julep, and Mojito. Backing fabric: Disco Kitty in 2 color ways from the Tula Pink Tabby Road collection. Top threads used were Aurifil 2588 and 6720.
