About Longarm Quilting

I’m so excited to work with you to complete your quilt!

Longarm Quilting Details:

Pricing: As of September 5, 2021, the current square inch price is $0.02 per square inch*. Thread included. Batting not included in square inch price.

Designs with an asterisk* are $0.03 per square inch due to the complexity of alignment and/or density.

Quilting requested at a heavier density may incur an additional cost of up to $0.01 per square inch (in addition to the $0.02 or $0.03 price).

Edge-to-Edge Quilting: I will quilt your quilt with an all-over design that will extend past the edges of the quilt top, making the edges nice and secure! Your quilt will be returned to you ready to be trimmed and bound.

Pantograph/Quilting Design: I provide edge-to-edge pantograph quilting. See pantographs here.

Once I receive your quilt top, I will send a picture of your quilt top and the design you chose at a scale I think will look fantastic for your approval.

*Most of my designs are $0.02 per square inch, only a few (marked with an * on the pantographs page, cost more due to the complexity of their precise alignment and/or density.)

Maximum Quilt Size: I can accept quilts up to 120” wide. As long as either the height or width of your quilt is less than 120”, we’re good to go!!

Preparation Tips/Before You Mail:

Follow these steps below to get your quilt top ready for quilting:

  • Be sure the seams on the edges of your quilt are nice and secure. Sometimes the edge seams can come apart with handling and loading. Stitching a line 1/8” away from the edge of your quilt top on all sides can help secure those edges! Note that this is not necessary for quilts with borders, just quilts with a lot of seams on the edges.

  • Trim all loose threads on quilt top as best you can. Dark threads can show through light fabrics.

  • For your backing, if you need to piece it, use a 1/2” seam and press it open. Make sure the ends of the seam are secure.

  • Press quilt top and backing.

  • Mark the top center of your quilt top and backing with masking tape or painter’s tape.

  • Please make sure your quilt top, backing, and batting (if applicable) are clean and free of pet hair. Some of my clients have allergies and there may be crossover between quilts.

Basting: Please do not baste your quilt layers together (top, batting, backing). Each piece is loaded separately onto the longarm.

Backing: Your quilt backing should be at least 4” bigger on all sides. (I need at least that much to successfully load your quilt on the longarm.) Ex: If your quilt is 50”x80”, backing should be a minimum of 58”X88”. Backing can be pieced, but please include a 1/2” seam pressed open. Press backing well.

If your backing is not at least 4” bigger on all sides and I have to add leaders to your backing in order to load it onto the machine, I will add a $10 charge to your invoice.

This is where quilts go when they arrive! I check them in, confirm pantograph size and thread color (by emailing the client a photo), and hang them here with the printed-out booking form until I am ready to quilt them!

Thread:

I provide the thread at no additional cost with the quilting service. The sky is the limit when it comes to top thread colors, however, I will only use one thread color on your quilt top. My favorite thread choice is one that blends with the lightest color in your quilt top, but this is totally your choice!

I'll use my favorite bobbin thread that gives me the best tension and blends exceptionally well. This color will be chosen based on the value of the top thread.

Just a few of the threads I have. :) I’m constantly adding more!

Batting:

I stock Quilter’s Dream Natural Select 100% Cotton, 80/20, and Quilter’s Dream Bamboo. You may send high quality batting with your quilt, but please contact me first.

  • Quilter’s Dream Natural (unbleached) Select Cotton is $0.43 per linear inch. This is a wonderful 100% cotton batting that is durable and soft with excellent drape!

  • Quilter’s Dream 80/20 is $0.47 per linear inch. This is a wonderful cotton/polyester blend that drapes beautifully!

  • Quilter’s Dream Bamboo is $0.49 per linear inch. It’s a washable/dryable blend of bamboo, silk, tencel, and cotton. This is my personal favorite and what I use in all of my own quilts! It’s warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer making it the perfect year-round batting! It also drapes wonderfully!

For quilting, I will use the smallest side + 6" margin (rounded up to the nearest inch). Ex: If your quilt is 50.5"x70.5", I will use 57" of batting.

If your quilt is greater than 87" on one side, I'll use the longest side to measure. (Ex: If your quilt is 72"x97.5", I will use 104" of batting.)

You are WELCOME to send quilts larger than 87" wide! I can accommodate quilts up to 120” wide on their shortest side.

Invoicing/Shipping:

When I finish quilting your quilt, I will email an invoice to you. I will ship your quilt out once the invoice has been paid. You are responsible for the return shipping cost and insurance (if desired). Quilts shipped via USPS Priority Mail.

Tax: For North Carolina residents, I am required by the state of North Carolina to charge the current rate of sales tax on the batting (if purchased).
