Dwight the Deer - Quilt #7

Summer 2018.

This quilt was made for some friends of mine who were expecting a baby boy! Both parents love to hunt and I knew this would be a perfect quilt for them!

This quilt is an Elizabeth Hartman pattern. She has so many cute animal quilt patterns! I was actually taking her Bluprint.com (Craftsy at the time) class on “Patchwork Piecing Woodland Animals” when the idea struck to make a quilt for the parents-to-be. I had seen Elizabeth Hartman’s patterns on Instagram and thought they were all so cute! Since I hadn’t done too much quilting, especially not with so many pieces, I thought the class would be a good refresher course and that I’d learn tips and tricks for working with her patterns, since I knew I wanted to make practically all of them!

The class was super helpful! It was built around two of her patterns, Bjorn Bear and Dwight the Deer. I based the color scheme for this quilt off of the class because the colors were so great! The same color scheme is used in the small version of the quilt pattern, which is what I made.

I definitely recommend the course if you’re new to quilting or just new to Elizabeth Hartman’s patterns. I really enjoyed it!

When I decided I wanted to make this quilt, I headed to a local fabric shop to buy all the materials for it. I grabbed fat quarters for the deer, some Kona cotton solids, and a fun chevron blue patterned fabric for the backing and borders.

The construction was intensive, but not difficult; Elizabeth Hartman’s patterns are full of detailed instructions and diagrams. It was so fun to watch each part come together like pieces of a puzzle! Also, the quilt blocks are really big, so the final quilt came together pretty quickly.

Fun fact: That mint colored deer actually has metallic antlers. It’s super subtle, but I thought it was a fun addition that the mom would enjoy.

I quilted this one with a V pattern; lines 4” apart. It worked really well with the angles in the antlers and the pattern of the back of the quilt. If I did this quilt again someday, I may use the same quilting pattern. I did use this same pattern on another quilt I made, but more on that in the future!

This quilt was so much fun to make - I can’t wait to make another sometime! Maybe in girly colors!

Quilt finished July 7, 2018.
