Bunnies - Quilt #5
Fall 2017.
This quilt.
It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first baby girl quilt I made and it has the sweetest colors and bunnies! I also did some embroidery on it with baby girl’s name.
I had originally planned to use the print fabrics and flannel backing for another window pane quilt like I did the Whale Quilt and the Dragon Quilt, but I saw an image of a quilt on Pinterest that changed my entire direction!
The purple fabric actually came from a failed attempt to make myself some skirts, but it was perfect for this project and turned out much better than any of my skirt attempts!
For this quilt, I used a bunny die to cut the bunny shape. For the embroidery, I drew the outline of the bunny in Illustrator, scaled it to the correct size, and created the embroidery file.
This was my first attempt at embroidery and appliqué. I had to keep this quilt pretty secret as I worked on it, (usually I post photos on social media) because as soon as I embroidered it, it’d be pretty obvious who it was for! I did post snippets of it, here and there, keeping the embroidered name hidden.
For the bunny sections, I marked each strip into four quadrants, found the center of each quadrant, and loaded that into my embroidery hoop. Shown above is the outline stitch of a bunny that I trimmed and then let the machine satin stitch back over. This bunny was not die cut first. I had never done any appliqué before, so I was trying different methods to see what worked best.
Each purple strip had four bunnies and alternating rows had the bunnies running in different directions. The bottom right bunny was the one I planned to embroider. For it, I added the baby’s name to the embroidery file. After the placement stitch was the satin stitch, and then the name. I was so pleased with how it turned out! It made the quilt so sweet and so special.
The quilt was backed in a cute, girly flannel with bunnies and other little animals.
I finished and gifted it in November 2017. It is one of my favorite finishes and probably always will be!
