Fancy Fox - Quilt #12

Winter/Spring 2019.

This quilt was part three of the gifts for my pastor and his wife’s newest baby! When I found out they were expecting a baby boy, I thought a fox quilt would be super fun! This quilt pattern, Fancy Fox, is from Elizabeth Hartman; the same designer of the Dwight the Deer pattern that I used in this quilt. I had seen a Fancy Fox quilt on Instagram that used oranges and yellows and I really liked it, so I knew I wanted to do something similar for the color scheme. When I saw the Kona Ratatouille bundle online, I knew it was the perfect choice. It had a great blend of colors and was exactly what I was looking for! To the bundle, I added two Kona blues since this quilt was for a baby boy. The blues added nice contrast to the color palette.

I pressed and starched all the fabric for this quilt and began cutting everything out. Once I had everything cut out and ready to sew, I sewed this quilt top together in three days! I enjoyed seeing each fox take shape, especially with all the different colors! I think the blue foxes are my favorite ones!

For the back of the quilt, I picked a royal blue minky. It added great softness and weight to the quilt. Before this quilt, I had never used minky, so I was a little nervous when it came time to pin-baste it and quilt it. I was doing this on my home machine, so I used a ton of pins and took my time quilting it. I quilted with a V pattern; lines 4” apart. I had done the same thing on the Dwight the Deer quilt and really liked how the angles of the quilting mixed with the angles in the deer. I knew that this fox quilt was also very angular, so I decided it would be the perfect way to quilt it. The quilting of it couldn’t have gone any better! The minky wasn’t bunched up or stretched out anywhere! I’m a new fan of minky for all baby quilts! Maybe even for all quilts! After quilting, I bound the quilt with the leftover fabric from binding and backing the Dwight the Deer quilt! It worked really well and I loved that fabric, so that made it was a win-win! So all three of these gifts (see gifts 1 and 2 here) used fabric leftovers from the same quilt!

Below is a picture of the back of the quilt. I just love how sharp the quilting looks on it!

I also collaborated with a friend of mine on the gifts for the baby. She makes amazing minky bears and made an amazing minky fox for the baby! He’s huge and so cute!

All in all, this was a really fun three-part project for an amazing family!
