The Heart Quilt - Quilt #16
Spring 2018. This is the quilt that launched me back into quilting! It also kicked off my Instagram.
I saw this quilt pattern on the Accuquilt website, and it was so pretty that I wanted to make one for myself, but I wanted to make it big enough to fit my queen-size bed.
I guess I was pretty ambitious jumping back into quilting with a queen-size quilt, but I was excited to tackle something so substantial and also excited that I could use it on my bed!
I went to the fabric store with my pattern in hand and started pulling colors. At the time, I didn't know anything about fabric designers and collections, I just went to my local big-box fabric store and got to work coordinating fabrics and estimating the added yardage for increasing the overall size.
Maybe we should really call this “The Risky Quilt,” haha! I had no idea if my estimates were even close to right, or how it would all look together and I hadn’t quilted in a long time! I also somehow bought my first wide-back fabric. That ended up working really well, because I didn’t have to piece my quilt back. I bought enough as if it was 42”/44” wide though, not 108”, so I ended up with enough to make matching pillow shams and binding!
I also pressed my seams open for this quilt! Why? I have no idea!
After taking about a four month break from this quilt, I started working on it again and finished the top November 1, 2018. When it was finished, I knew I wanted to longarm it or get it longarm quilted since it was so big!
Fast forward about a year, and I went ahead and sent it off it be longarm quilted. I was thinking about renting time on a longarm machine to quilt it myself, but I decided to go ahead and send it off so that it could finally be finished!
I picked a light pink thread for the quilting because I knew it would blend in well with the heart and would look almost white on the grey. I am really pleased with the quilting on it and the thread color! I’m excited to sleep under a quilt I made!
