Sweet Treat - Quilt #19
Spring 2020. This quilt was my first new project of 2020. It was exciting to jump into something new after finishing all the Christmas pillows.
I got a quilt kit to make this quilt. The quilt kit featured fabric by Corey Yoder. Most of the fabrics were the same fabrics that the pattern designer had used to make a second version of this quilt and thus inspired the kit. When I saw her second quilt on Instagram, I knew I had to make it! It would be the perfect summer quilt! Wanting to have it finished in time for summer is also why it became my first new project of the year.
This quilt went together really quickly and I loved watching it take shape! I actually sewed part of the Ice Cream Truck together with the wrong fabrics and decided to take it apart and fix it. I knew I’d probably regret it if I left it, and I’m glad I took the time to fix it.
When the quilt top was finished, I decided I wanted to make it a little bit bigger for lounging, so I added a 5” border around the quilt and I definitely think it was the right choice! My mom trimmed the top up for me before I added the 5” border because it was a bit uneven. I actually had to order more background fabric for the borders but it was totally worth it!
I sent this one off to be longarm quilted with a Cloud pattern. I like how it resembled scoops of ice cream! When it came back, I added the binding to finish it up.
I also made a pillow using the soft serve ice cream pattern for my Uncle. Whenever we’re together, we manage to find an ice cream shop! This is a tradition I never want to break! I embroidered chocolate chips onto some Kona Ice Frappe to make mint chocolate chip ice cream - the last ice cream he had before I made the pillow. For the back I used Kona Ice Frappe and added a simple pillow flap. The ice cream cone fabrics were leftovers from the Sweet Treat Quilt. I quilted this on my Juki 2010Q with horizontal lines in order to avoid the embroidery!
