Lloyd and Lola - Quilt #15

Spring 2019. Another graduation gift. This one was for another life-long friend (see the post about my sister’s graduation quilt). Though this recipient is not related by blood, she may as well be a sister because I’ve known her her whole life and she’s always been a close friend! I had to keep this quilt fairly secret as I worked on it because I was afraid the she might see progress posts on social media. Given the subject matter of this quilt, it wouldn’t have been a stretch for her to guess it was for her!

This quilt pattern is Lloyd and Lola, another Elizabeth Hartman pattern. She has so many different animal patterns! I’ve already made Dwight the Deer and Lepidoptera quilts from her patterns. This one was fun because the llamas are so big! It makes construction quick and has great impact!

I used various fat quarters and solids for this quilt which were inspired by the colors used on the cover of the quilt. The back is a super cute llama flannel that I stumbled upon one day while out fabric shopping and I was so happy to find! It couldn’t have gone any better with the fabrics that I had picked out for the quilt top.

I sent this one of to be longarm quilted due to it’s size (61”x71”!) and the fact that I was on a deadline to finish this one in time for graduation in June! The quilting on it is a gorgeous flower tile effect, though I don’t know the exact name of it. I chose a thread that would blend into the llamas so that they didn’t have any lines running through them distracting from their cuteness! I find that I tend to like a light colored thread, something that’ll go with the lightest parts of the quilt, that way it blends in instead of standing out.

For the binding, I cut up the leftover sections of fat quarters from the pom pom rows and made a scrappy binding! Scroll back up to see the scrappiness! I didn’t even measure it before I started putting it on. I was nervous because it looked like it wasn't going to be enough. When I joined the ends of the binding together, I didn’t even have 10” left! I had never done scrappy binding before, but I love how it used up the little bit of fabric I had left in such a perfect way! I definitely see more scrappy binding in my future!

Quilt finished June 14, 2019. Pattern is Lloyd and Lola by Elizabeth Hartman. No details on fabric used.
