Zoo Quilt and a Keepsake Quilt - Quilts 10 & 11

Fall 2018.

I finished these two quilts near the end of last year.

One was for a friend of my sisters. It was made using the same pattern from the whales quilt and the dragons quilt. I used the zoo animal flannel backing to pull colors for the front of the quilt. The orange and blue fabrics have a marbled look to them and are super bright and cheery! This was a perfect quilt for a baby! All the animals in the flannel backing had the name of the animal on them – it was super cute!

I quilted this one with a white thread with diagonal lines running across it in one direction. The same blue fabric that I used in the squares was used for the binding.

The second quilt was made for a relative of mine. She sent me the leftover fabric from dresses that she had made her granddaughter when she was a little girl. She wanted me to make a quilt using the fabric scraps as a memory quilt for her now-grown granddaughter. I used an hourglass block for this quilt and, with some additional white fabric, made as many blocks as I could with the fabric scraps. I also used some bright yellow fabric to create a border and for the binding and backing. I made a small half square triangle border for the quilt. The quilt was fun to watch come together. There was so much variety in the fabrics used and the white was a great way to blend them all together! It was also fun to think about when these fabrics were used and how beautiful the dresses must have been!

I quilted this one with an invisible thread in the ditch of the blocks. I had never used invisible thread before, but it was a great choice because I didn’t want to pull attention away from the fabrics that were used since they were the purpose for the entire quilt! The invisible thread had a texture almost like finishing line. Thankfully, my machine handled it well. My nephew even helped me quilt this one! He loves watching me work on projects and he sat in my lap while I slowly sewed. It was a lot of fun and built yet another memory into this quilt! He was just two at the time, but he sat there patiently working for half an hour! We may have to work on another project together soon!

Those were my last two project finishes for 2018. The same day I finished those quilts, I started on a quilted pillow. More on that in the next blog post!
